Tulane Falls 87-85 to Jackson State in Heartbreaking Fashion
November 5, 2026 | Avron B. Fogelman Arena (Devlin Fieldhouse)
A game Tulane controlled for most of the night ended in heartbreaking fashion.
The Green Wave led for 36:04 and never trailed until the final 1.6 seconds, when a timeout call with none remaining handed Jackson State two free throws and the win.
How It Played Out:
Tulane jumped out early and built a 15-point lead (30-15) in the first half.
They shot well from deep early and controlled the glass, taking a 42-38 edge into the break. Jackson State closed the half on a 6-0 run but still trailed.
In the second half the Wave pushed the lead back out to 57-49. Jackson State chipped away and eventually tied it at 81-81, then again at 85-85 late. The game stayed tied until the final possession.
With 1.6 seconds left and the score knotted, Tulane blocked a Jackson State attempt and appeared set to take the last shot.
Krystian Lewis, after getting out in transition, tried to call a timeout the Wave didn’t have.
The technical foul gave Daeshun Ruffin two free throws, he made both for Jackson State’s first lead of the night.
On the ensuing inbound, Dorian McMillian blocked TJ Nadeau’s three-point attempt, sealing the 87-85 final.
Key Numbers
• Turnovers: Tulane 17, Jackson State 10 (Jackson State scored 18 points off turnovers)
• Free throws: Tulane 21-30 (70%), Jackson State 20-24 (83%)
• Rebounding: Tulane won the glass 39-28
• Largest lead: Tulane 15
Coach Ron Hunter pointed to the bigger issues afterward: “When you have 17 turnovers and miss nine free throws, that was the difference. We just went to kind of hero ball… It cost us.”
Standouts
Tulane
• TJ Nadeau: 16 points (4-9 from three)
• Carson Schwieger: 16 points (3-6 from three)
• Tyler Ringgold: 13 points, 8 rebounds
• KJ Greene: 10 points, 8 assists
• Joah Chappelle: 12 points off the bench.
I really like Chappelle and excited to see how he progresses.
Remember 4 star Freshman forward Tobias Brinkley is hurt but should be back in January.
Jackson State
• Dorian McMillian: 23 points, 7 rebounds
• Mike Williams: 20 points (4-7 from three)
• Daeshun Ruffin: 17 points, 8 assists (and the game-winning free throws)
Bottom Line
Tulane played well enough for stretches to win, especially on the glass and from deep in the first half.
But the combination of too many turnovers, missed free throws, and the late mental mistake proved fatal. It was a tough way to drop to 1-1, and the first loss to Jackson State since 1992.
Up next: Tulane hosts Nicholls on Tuesday.
