Pump Da Party: Tulane Rolls Jags in Home Opener

Marcelo Unda • September 3, 2023

Week One in College Football has finally arrived and Tulane took care of business at home versus last year's Sun Belt Champion South Alabama Jaguars. I will admit I had reasons to be concern with what the 2023 Green Wave would look like without key pieces like Tyjae Spears & Nick Anderson missing on both sides of the ball. [I broke it down in my last post: Can Tulane Repeat Success? ]  I thought Head Coach Willie Fritz called a great a game. The fans really showed out at home.

Mr. Prat-tastic

Michael Pratt didnt' have a coming out party. He just picked up where he left off. 14-15, 294 yards & 4 tuddies. Pretty cool that he ties the school record for passing touchdowns that was set over 20 years ago. He'll only need 2,000 more yards to beat Ramsey's All Time passing leader record.

Steel Wave

Very Impressive outing by the Green Wave defense. Only 4 starters return from last year, and they looked like a cohesive unit.  Creating turnovers and putting pressure on Carter Bradley all game. Turnovers by the offense put the defense in tough spots. Bend but don't break  mantra really was the mindset for this unit. The defense allowed only 17 points,  75 rushing yards, 190 passing yards, 5 sacks, 2 INT, & 2 fumbles.  A defense that ranked 2nd in the AAC last year shows the culture that Fritz has established is built around an elite defense.

Coach O sighting in NOLA! Always great to see him around College Football. I would have guessed Ed would have been at Garth Brooks. I'm sure he sang a little diddy at the Cat's Meow before the night was over.

South Alabama try to make a statement on the road against the Wave to remind the world where Mardi Gras started. All it did was just remind people that it doesn't matter where it started. I think as South Alabama continues to grow as a program that these teams can build a rivalry. Try to think of some good names to call it: Battle of Krewes?? Battle of I-10. Needs to have a trophy: bowl full of moon pies. The trophy can actually be a huge Hand Grenade bottle.

The Garth Brooks concert was a blast. I am not the biggest country music fan, but getting to witness the crowd sing every word to every song. You could tell Garth was eating it up during the show. I'm sure every show is like that because it's Garth Brooks. His fans have been listening to him since 1988. The concert was awesome. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Lainey Wilson open up for Garth which was a lot of fun.

247Sports All-Time Commits rankings showing player cards with photos and ratings; Tylan George and Jordyn Crites visible

Tulane Green Wave fans have plenty to celebrate this cycle and previous. According to the latest 247Sports composite rankings, the Green Wave have landed the two highest-rated recruits in program history for the Class of 2026, and they’re not just any two prospects. Tylan George, the massive interior offensive lineman from West Monroe High School in Louisiana, sits at No. 1 with a 0.8939 rating. The 6’3”, 310-pound 4-star prospect has been a dominant force on the offensive line, earning praise for his pancake block totals and elite strength (515-pound squat, 315 bench as a junior). George brings immediate size, power, and local pride to an offensive line room that’s hungry for impact talent. Right behind him at No. 2 is Jordyn Crites, the 6’6”, 255-260 pound defensive lineman from Friendswood High School in Texas. Crites recently earned his 4-star upgrade and a 0.8926 composite, making him one of the most athletic and long defensive linemen in the class (83-inch wingspan, 4.8 forty, 530-pound squat). He played both defensive end and tight end in high school and brings versatility, length, and upside that fits perfectly in Will Hall’s defensive scheme. Together, George and Crites represent a seismic shift in Tulane recruiting. Not only are they the top two in the 2026 class, but their ratings mark a new ceiling for what the Green Wave can attract. One bolsters the trenches on offense with mauling power; the other adds length and explosiveness on defense. Both have potential to contribute early and raise the floor (and ceiling) for their respective position groups. This isn’t just a good class, it’s a statement. Tulane is no longer just competing for regional talent; they’re landing blue-chip prospects who have Power conference offers and are choosing to build something special in New Orleans. The Green Wave are trending up, and these two are the new faces of that ascent. #RollWave #RMFW Make sure to follow Patrick Harkness on X
