Roster Reality: What Do the Pelicans Actually Have?
NEW ORLEANS -- It's easy to get caught up in what the New Orleans Pelicans could become. Zion Williamson stays healthy. Trey Murphy III takes another step. Jeremiah Fears develops into a starting-caliber guard. Jamahl Mosley transforms the defense.
But before we talk about potential, there's a more important question:
What does this roster actually have right now? The answer is more encouraging than a 26-56 record might suggest.
The Pelicans have a legitimate star in Zion, an elite perimeter defender in Herb Jones, a proven scorer and shooter in Trey Murphy III, and veteran playmaking from Dejounte Murray. Jordan Poole gives them another offensive creator, while young players such as Fears, Yves Missi and Derik Queen provide developmental upside.
That's a lot of talent, but there's a difference between having talent and having a team.
The Biggest Question: How Do the Pieces Fit?
That's where Mosley comes in. The Pelicans' roster has plenty of athleticism and defensive versatility, but the team needs to establish exactly how it wants to play.
Can Zion be the offensive centerpiece without the floor becoming crowded?
Can Murphy become a consistent second scoring option?
Can Fears provide reliable guard play?
Can Missi become the defensive anchor?
And perhaps most importantly, can the Pelicans turn their individual defensive talent into a cohesive unit?
Those questions matter more than any individual player's statistics.
The Good News
New Orleans doesn't need to tear everything down…yet. The roster already has several complementary pieces. The challenge is developing them, defining their roles and creating an identity that makes sense for the entire group.
That's where a new coaching voice can make a difference. Mosley's job isn't simply to get more out of each player. It's to figure out how to get more out of the roster as a whole.
The Pelicans have enough talent to make this season interesting, but talent isn't the question anymore. Fit is.
If Mosley can turn Zion, Murphy, Murray, Jones and the young players into a team with a clear identity, New Orleans could look very different from the team that won just 26 games last season.
The roster doesn't need to be perfect; it needs to make sense.
Understand the Pelicans. Don't just watch them.
