Losing Streak Continues for Pelicans

DALLAS -- Points off turnovers and a lack of offense resulted in the New Orleans Pelicans’ 10th straight loss on Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks, 111-106.

The Pelicans team arrived in Dallas the day of the game because icy weather prevented the local team from arriving the day before, which is customary. Larry Nance Jr. tweeted that the buses had not even arrived on time to take them from where they landed to American Airlines Center.

The first half of the Pelicans game was confusing. Of course everyone was tired, but the Pels’ defense gave up 70 points in the first half. SEVENTY. The Mavs scored 25 points off turnovers , and the Pels went 1-of-9 from the three-point line, including five missed three pointers from (you’ll never guess who) Herb Jones, who is known for his defensive presence, not his deep-ball threat.

In the second half, the Pelicans attempted to change up some defensive matchups, but trying to overcome the 30+ point deficit was too much. However, the Nola squad did rally and make it a three-point game with less than seven seconds to go. It was at that point, the referees admittedly made two bad calls that would have given the Pelicans the ball with 6.6 seconds left on the clock.

As frustrating as the missed calls were, the Pelicans played so poorly in the first half that it became a matter of not having enough time to pull off the comeback.

In good news, though, Brandon Ingram looked like he got his groove back, hitting his mid-range jumpers and finishing the game with 26 points and nine board. CJ McCollum scored 19 points and Jonas Valenciunas ended the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

New Orleans will play again on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5 pm at home against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yay ! * Jordan Poole was back tonight and he made a world of difference. His three-point shooting, confidence, and leadership were a ton of help. * Derik Queen is a problem for all other 29 teams in this league. This kid has a vision that hasn't been seen in any recent rookies, especially for a center. * Bryce McGowens was the second-leading scorer in this game with 23 points. He's stepped up in a big way. * In surprising news, Zion Williamson is questionable for Sunday's game at the Chicago Bulls. This is the first time in what seems like years that Zion's health is actually improving much sooner than projected. Whether this is a sign of Zion pushing himself or James Borrego pushing him, it's nice to see. Follow @TheKneaux on X, and follow me there too, @SportsChrissy.
