 Dalton Hughes - USA

 (6’3”, 227 lbs, redshirt senior linebacker from Tupelo, MS) is a veteran transfer addition who fits seamlessly into Tulane’s 2026 defense as a South Alabama import. He committed around January 2026, and has already made an impact in spring practices and fall camp under head coach Will Hall and defensive coordinator Tayler Polk.

 Why Dalton fits.

 • Scheme versatility:

In the hybrid front, Tulane’s defense (coordinated by Tayler Polk) features multiple looks with stand-up edge players and hybrid “Bandit”-type roles that blend outside linebacker duties with pass-rush responsibilities. Hughes projects perfectly as an OLB/edge setter: he’s an effective gap-shooter with burst, bend, and hand usage to disrupt in the backfield (PFF graded him as South Alabama’s No. 2 pass rusher in 2025 despite limited snaps). He also brings reliable run defense as a pursuit tackler in space and can drop into coverage or play inside in sub packages, exactly the kind of flexible, high-motor piece the staff targeted to replace portal departures and add depth to a relatively young LB room.

 • Immediate veteran experience and production:

A four-year contributor who appeared in 38 games (with key starts in 2025), Hughes brings 67 career tackles, 4.5 TFL, 2 sacks, and a fumble recovery. In 2025 alone he posted a career-high 40 tackles (including 10 in one game vs. Texas State) while staying healthy and flashing more as a pass-rush threat. After battling injuries earlier in his career, he’s now a durable, high-assist-rate tackler and special-teams stalwart who can mentor younger players while contributing right away on defense and special teams.

 • Proven playmaker in spring ball: Hughes has already flashed in Tulane’s 2026 spring practices. In the first scrimmage he scooped a fumble and returned it for what would have been a touchdown (whistle stopped the play). He’s been part of a stable LB group that has multiple guys who can start, exactly the veteran presence Hall has highlighted as key to the unit’s development.

 • Regional ties and culture fit:

A Mississippi native from Tupelo, Hughes has natural connections to the program:

He visited campus, was blown away by the facilities, coaches, and most importantly, Tulane’s winning culture after four straight AAC title game appearances and a top-25 finish. He canceled other visits (including Southern Miss) because “Tulane wins games” and he wanted that for his final college season. He’s also a high-character scholar-athlete (Campbell Trophy nominee) who fits the program’s blue-collar, high-motor identity.

 In short, Dalton Hughes is a low-risk, high-character portal win who plugs immediate depth needs, adds proven edge/pass-rush upside, and embodies the winning mentality Will Hall is building. He’s the type of experienced, versatile leader who helps keep Tulane’s defense potentially be elite in the AAC for 2026.

Class of 2026 Spotlight: LJ Moton

DB/Spear  LJ Moton 6-4/186 Katleen, GA  Scouting Report: 4.51 Forty  Rare Size/Length: At 6’4” with long arms, he disrupts passing lanes naturally, high points the ball in contested situations, and matches up physically with bigger WRs or TEs in the red zone.  Fluid mover, changes direction smoothly and maintains speed in transitions.  Ball Skills & Playmaking Instincts: Excellent hands and “nose for the football.” Tracks deep balls well, flashes range as a free safety or post safety and creates turnovers (INTs + PBUs).  Two-way background helps; he shows natural receiving skills and ball security when the offense needs him.  Range & Versatility: Can play multiple spots in the secondary (deep FS, slot/nickel, or even boundary CB in press). Good closing speed and pursuit angle discipline for a tall DB. Could see him playing spear for Tulane.  Tackling in Space: Secure open-field form tackler who doesn’t shy from contact; wraps up well and drives through.  High Upside/Raw Traits: Still developing technique and strength (10 lbs +) but possesses the physical tools and athletic ceiling to develop into a starter or even standout with coaching. HOF Homage To Drew Brees

Drew Brees will always be my quarterback. He was the quarterback when I first made the Saints my favorite team as a child and the only quarterback to bring a Super Bowl to New Orleans. Drew Brees is the embodiment of an underdog. Drew never was the biggest or the strongest or the fastest on the football field. But what Drew did was maximize every god given talent he had and a deep desire to win. But not just for himself, win for those around him and those who believed in him. We all put our hopes and dreams into the Saints and their quarterback because we finally had someone worthy to carry those aspirations to the promise land. Drew showed all of us year after year he was meant to be in the Hall of Fame. Everything he did was with intention and a high level of detail so he can be the absolute best he could be so he can take the Saints where they needed to go. Take your pick of what statistics Drew had during his career which proved and showcased his talent. My favorite is the record for most seasons with a completion percentage of 70% or higher. Drew’s accuracy was second to none during his career. The amount of times we watched Drew carve up a defense with his precision was what made him so entertaining to watch every week. I don’t think you can think of Drew Brees and not think of all the times he threaded the needle on a touchdown throw in the red zone to guys like Marques Colston or Lance Moore. You just knew on any given Sunday Drew could do something special and lead the team to a victory. The fact he was able to lead a team with one of if not the worst defenses of all time to a 7-9 record of itself was amazing. Amazing is just one of the many adjectives you can use to describe Drew Brees but when you lump them all together you get greatness. Greatness of his level is something you don’t get to see too often but man is it special to watch and appreciate when you have it. I think we all knew that when we watched him play but now that we’re here on the verge of him being enshrined I can say this with absolute certainty. There will probably never be another quarterback to play for the Saints who means as much to the city of New Orleans and Saints fans as Drew Brees. He’s our greatest champion and a perfect example of a first ballot hall of fame quarterback. The legend of Drew Brees will live on forever in Canton, Ohio right where we all knew it would.
