PREVIEW: Nicholls Looks to End Losing Streak Against Unbeaten Stephen F. Austin
The Colonels return from their bye week looking to turn their season around as one of the top teams in the FCS travels to Thibodaux for a Southland Conference showdown.
THIBODAUX, La. — The Nicholls Colonels return to John L. Guidry Stadium Saturday afternoon with an opportunity to get their season back on track, but standing in their way will be the best team in the Southland Conference and one of the top teams in the FCS.
Stephen F. Austin enters Saturday's matchup undefeated at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Nicholls comes in at 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Southland after dropping its last three games.
For the Colonels, Saturday represents an opportunity to show improvement after a difficult stretch. Nicholls has struggled to find consistency offensively while its defense has had difficulty slowing down opposing teams.
For the Lumberjacks, the objective is simple: remain undefeated and continue strengthening their position atop the Southland Conference standings.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, October 17, in Thibodaux, with the game available on ESPN+.
Stephen F. Austin Has Established Itself as the Southland's Best
There is no denying what Stephen F. Austin has accomplished through the first six games of the season.
The Lumberjacks have established themselves as the team to beat in the Southland Conference, and their performances have made them one of the top teams in the FCS.
SFA has outscored opponents 230-91 and has been impressive on both sides of the football. The Lumberjacks are averaging 38.3 points and 465.7 yards per game while holding opponents to just 15.2 points and 352.2 yards.
Perhaps even more impressive is the balance of the Lumberjacks' offense.
SFA averages 197 rushing yards and 268.7 passing yards per game, making it difficult for opposing defenses to focus on stopping just one aspect of the offense.
Quarterback Gavin Rutherford has been one of the driving forces behind the team's success. Rutherford has thrown for 1,488 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading an offense that has produced 30 total touchdowns through six games.
On the ground, Jaylen Jenkins leads the Lumberjacks with 371 rushing yards, followed closely by Speedy Jones with 329 yards. Both have provided consistent production, giving SFA multiple options when attacking opposing defenses.
Through the air, Bugs Mortimer has emerged as Rutherford's top target, leading the team with 23 receptions for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Clayton Wayland has contributed another 288 receiving yards, providing another option capable of making plays downfield.
Defensively, SFA has been just as impressive. The Lumberjacks are allowing just 93.3 rushing yards per game and have recorded nine sacks through their first six contests.
However, SFA has not been completely untouchable. Its most recent game against Incarnate Word required the Lumberjacks to hold on for a 28-26 victory, showing that teams can challenge them.
That is something Nicholls will certainly look to build on Saturday.
Nicholls Looking for an Offensive Spark
The Colonels had an opportunity to regroup during their bye week following a disappointing 16-2 loss to Houston Christian on October 3.
That loss followed defeats to Lamar and Sam Houston, leaving Nicholls searching for answers after what had been a promising 2-1 start to the season.
Through six games, Nicholls is averaging 16.3 points and 297.8 yards per contest. The Colonels have had difficulty sustaining drives, converting just 28.7% of their third-down opportunities.
Quarterback Ean Rodrigue has completed 83 of 155 passes for 862 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. However, with multiple quarterbacks seeing playing time this season, there has been no confirmation on who will start against Stephen F. Austin.
The rushing attack has also struggled to establish consistency. Tamaj Hoffman leads Nicholls with 284 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Shane Lee has contributed another 221 yards.
One bright spot has been wide receiver Jordan Smith, who leads the Colonels with 28 receptions for 366 yards and three touchdowns. Smith suffered an apparent ankle injury late against Houston Christian, and there has been no update on his availability for Saturday.
Greg Donaldson has also provided a big-play threat, averaging 20 yards per reception this season.
For Nicholls to have an opportunity against SFA, the offense must find ways to sustain possessions and avoid putting its defense in difficult situations.
Could Nicholls Find an Advantage With Its Pass Rush?
While the overall statistics heavily favor Stephen F. Austin, there is one area where Nicholls could potentially take advantage of the Lumberjacks.
Through six games, SFA has allowed 23 sacks, an average of nearly four per game.
That is an interesting number considering how productive the Lumberjacks have been offensively. Despite averaging nearly 39 points and more than 465 yards per contest, protecting the quarterback has been an area where SFA has struggled.
For Nicholls, that could present an opportunity.
The Colonels have had their own defensive struggles this season, but getting pressure on Rutherford could be one of the biggest factors in keeping Saturday's contest competitive.
If Nicholls can consistently disrupt Rutherford in the pocket, it could force the Lumberjacks into longer third-down situations and potentially create opportunities for turnovers.
However, getting pressure is only part of the equation.
Nicholls will have to find a way to contain SFA's rushing attack while creating pressure without constantly relying on additional defenders. With Jenkins and Jones combining for 700 rushing yards, committing too many players to the pass rush could leave the Colonels vulnerable on the ground.
It will be a difficult balance for the Nicholls defense, but one that could play a significant role in determining how Saturday's game unfolds.
Breaking Down the Matchup
When looking at the numbers, Stephen F. Austin has a significant advantage in nearly every major statistical category.
The Lumberjacks are averaging 38.3 points per game compared to just 16.3 for Nicholls. SFA is also producing 465.7 yards of total offense per game, nearly 168 yards more than the Colonels' average of 297.8.
The difference is particularly noticeable in the running game. SFA averages 197 rushing yards per contest, while Nicholls is averaging 126.3. The Lumberjacks have also been much better at stopping the run, allowing just 93.3 rushing yards per game compared to the 178.2 allowed by Nicholls.
Defensively, the difference is even more concerning for the Colonels. SFA is giving up just 15.2 points per game, while Nicholls is allowing 38.8.
Third-down efficiency is another area where the Lumberjacks have been considerably better. SFA has converted 44.6% of its third-down opportunities compared to just 28.7% for Nicholls.
Those numbers help explain why SFA enters the matchup unbeaten and why Nicholls has struggled through the first half of its season.
However, there is one statistic that stands out in Nicholls' favor. The Lumberjacks have allowed 23 sacks through six games, something the Colonels will certainly look to exploit.
What Nicholls Must Do to Compete
It is no secret that Nicholls will enter Saturday as the underdog, but there are several areas where the Colonels can give themselves a chance.
First, Nicholls must establish some consistency offensively. The Colonels have struggled to move the football during their three-game losing streak, and that cannot continue against an SFA offense capable of putting points on the board quickly.
Second, Nicholls must find a way to pressure Rutherford. The 23 sacks allowed by the Lumberjacks stand out, and if the Colonels can make Rutherford uncomfortable, it could help slow down an otherwise productive offense.
Third, Nicholls must limit explosive plays. SFA has several offensive weapons capable of turning a short gain into a big play, and the Colonels cannot afford to allow those opportunities consistently.
Finally, Nicholls must take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves.
Whether that means forcing turnovers, converting on third down or finishing drives with touchdowns instead of field goals, the Colonels will need to capitalize on nearly every opportunity they receive.
Against an undefeated team, mistakes become even more costly.
A Familiar Opponent With Recent Success
Stephen F. Austin has won the last two meetings between the programs, including a 34-7 victory in 2025 and a 28-12 win in 2024.
Prior to those meetings, Nicholls had won consecutive matchups in 2018 and 2019, including a 48-30 victory in 2019.
The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series 27-11, giving SFA another advantage entering Saturday's matchup.
An Opportunity to Change the Direction of the Season
It would be easy to look at the records and assume Saturday will be another difficult afternoon for Nicholls. The statistics certainly favor Stephen F. Austin, and the Lumberjacks have done very little this season to suggest they are slowing down.
But games are not won on paper.
For head coach Tommy Rybacki and the Colonels, the focus must be on correcting the issues that have hurt them throughout the season. That means establishing some consistency offensively, limiting big plays defensively and finding ways to keep drives alive.
The bye week provided Nicholls with additional time to evaluate its struggles and make adjustments. Whether those adjustments translate into a better performance remains to be seen.
One area worth watching will certainly be the Nicholls pass rush against an SFA offensive line that has struggled to protect its quarterback despite the team's success.
Can Nicholls take advantage of that matchup? Can the Colonels find some offensive production against one of the conference's better defenses? And can they avoid the mistakes that have hurt them throughout the first half of the season?
Those questions will go a long way in determining what happens Saturday afternoon.
An upset over undefeated Stephen F. Austin would not erase the struggles of the first six games, but it would provide some much-needed momentum as the Colonels prepare for the final stretch of Southland Conference play.
For SFA, another victory keeps its undefeated season alive and strengthens its position as the team to beat in the Southland.
For Nicholls, it could be the win that changes the conversation surrounding the remainder of its season.
A quick share helps us a lot!
