Which Young Pelican Will Make the Biggest Leap This Season?
NEW ORLEANS -- Which young Pelican player will make the biggest leap this season? Well, every successful NBA team eventually reaches a point where its young players stop being "promising" and start becoming contributors. For the New Orleans Pelicans, that development could determine how much progress this team makes in 2026-27. There are several candidates, but if I had to pick one young Pelican to make the biggest leap this season, I'm going with Yves Missi.
The reason is simple: Missi doesn't need to become a star overnight, but he needs to become dependable. As a rookie, Missi showed flashes of the athleticism, length and defensive instincts that made him an intriguing prospect. But the next step is learning how to consistently use those tools against NBA-level competition. That's where I think Jamahl Mosley could make a major difference. Since Mosley built his reputation in Orlando around defense and player development, for a young big like Missi, that's an ideal environment.
The biggest area to watch is his positioning. Missi has the physical tools to protect the rim, but great defensive centers aren't simply shot blockers. They understand angles, timing, positioning and when to step up versus when to stay home. If Missi can improve those areas, his defensive impact could increase dramatically.
The other area of improvement for Missi is on the offensive side. It's not about turning him in a 20-point per game player, it's about becoming someone defenses have to respect. Finishing around the rim, setting stronger screens, running the floor and making the simple pass can make him incredibly valuable alongside Zion Williamson, which is much needed. Imagine a Pelicans offense where Zion draws two defenders, Missi dives toward the rim and the perimeter opens up.
The bottom line is that the Pelicans don't need Missi to become someone he's not; they just need him to become a smarter, more consistent version of the player he already is. If his defensive instincts catch up with his physical tools, Missi could quietly become one of the biggest reasons New Orleans takes a step forward this season.
