Northwestern State Sweeps Nicholls as Colonels Struggle to Find Offensive Rhythm
Lady Demons take advantage of Nicholls' offensive struggles to earn a straight-set Southland Conference victory in Thibodaux.
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls Colonels struggled to find consistency offensively Thursday evening as Northwestern State came into David R. Stopher Gymnasium and picked up a 3-0 victory in Southland Conference volleyball action.
The Lady Demons took the match in straight sets, winning 25-18, 25-18, and 25-19, improving to 12-10 overall and 4-3 in Southland Conference play.
For Nicholls, the loss dropped the Colonels to 9-11 overall and 2-5 in conference action as they continue looking for answers during the Southland portion of their schedule.
While Nicholls had some competitive stretches throughout the evening, Northwestern State was able to control much of the match with an efficient offensive performance and strong play at the net.
Northwestern State Takes Control Early
The opening set saw both teams battle through several competitive moments, with eight ties and three lead changes.
Nicholls put together its best offensive set of the evening, recording 13 kills on 32 attempts while hitting .250.
However, Northwestern State was even more efficient.
The Lady Demons finished the opening set with 15 kills and just two attacking errors, hitting an impressive .394 to take the set 25-18.
That offensive efficiency would become a major factor throughout the match.
Despite Nicholls showing it could compete offensively in the opening set, the Colonels struggled to maintain that production as the evening continued.
Second Set Proves Difficult for Nicholls
After dropping the opening set, Nicholls needed to find a way to slow down Northwestern State and get its offense going.
Unfortunately for the Colonels, the second set would be their most difficult of the match offensively.
Nicholls managed just four kills on 33 attempts, finishing with a .030 hitting percentage.
Northwestern State, meanwhile, recorded 17 kills in the set, its highest total of the evening.
The Lady Demons hit .209 and took advantage of Nicholls' inability to consistently generate scoring opportunities.
Unlike the opening set, where both teams traded leads, Northwestern State controlled the second set without a tie or lead change.
The result was another 25-18 victory, putting the Lady Demons one set away from completing the sweep.
For Nicholls, the offensive struggles in the second set created a difficult situation heading into the third.
Colonels Battle but Cannot Avoid Sweep
Nicholls showed some fight in the third set, but Northwestern State continued to find ways to finish points.
The final set featured eight ties and four lead changes, showing that Nicholls was not simply going to allow Northwestern State to walk away with the match.
The Colonels recorded 13 kills in the third set, matching their first-set production. However, 10 attacking errors proved costly as Nicholls finished the set hitting just .071.
Northwestern State continued to play efficient volleyball, recording 12 kills with only one attacking error for a .367 hitting percentage.
The Lady Demons eventually pulled away for a 25-19 victory, completing the three-set sweep.
While Nicholls had opportunities to make things interesting, especially in the first and third sets, Northwestern State's ability to limit mistakes and convert attacks ultimately made the difference.
Sanchez Leads Northwestern State Offensively
Elsie Sanchez led the Lady Demons with a match-high 13 kills on 30 attempts, finishing with a .267 hitting percentage.
Elizabeth Muguruza added 10 kills, five digs, and two service aces, while Amber Craig contributed eight kills without an attacking error, hitting .400.
Olivia Nzioki also had an efficient evening, recording five kills on 11 attempts without an error for a .455 hitting percentage.
Northwestern State setter Jade Longlad played an important role in keeping the offense moving, finishing with 33 assists, seven digs, and two service aces.
Defensively, Emmarie McFarland led the Lady Demons with 17 digs, while Kenadii Winfrey recorded three solo blocks and three block assists.
As a team, Northwestern State finished with 44 kills on 106 attempts, hitting .311 for the match.
That was a significant difference compared to Nicholls, which finished with 30 kills and a .112 hitting percentage.
Edwards-Wyllie Provides Spark for Nicholls
Despite the loss, Zahahrah Edwards-Wyllie provided one of the bright spots for the Colonels.
Edwards-Wyllie led Nicholls with eight kills on just 13 attempts, finishing with an impressive .462 hitting percentage.
Madison Smith and Kera Arrington each added seven kills for Nicholls.
Smith also contributed nine digs and two service aces, while Natalia Navarro led the Colonels defensively with 14 digs.
Jenna Cicherski finished with 11 assists, while Isabella Padilla added nine.
However, the biggest issue for Nicholls was the inability to consistently produce offensively.
The Colonels committed 18 attacking errors compared to just 11 for Northwestern State.
Nicholls also struggled at times in serve receive, allowing nine service aces while recording only four of its own.
While the Colonels managed to stay competitive during stretches of the match, those offensive struggles made it difficult to build momentum.
Nicholls Looking for Answers in Southland Play
Thursday's loss was another difficult result for Nicholls as the Colonels continue navigating their Southland Conference schedule.
At 2-5 in conference play, Nicholls has shown the ability to compete during stretches of matches, but putting together a complete performance remains a challenge.
One of the biggest takeaways from Thursday's match was the difference in offensive consistency.
Northwestern State finished with a .311 hitting percentage compared to .112 for Nicholls. The Lady Demons also held a 44-30 advantage in kills and a 9-4 advantage in service aces.
Those numbers tell much of the story.
Nicholls actually finished with one more attack attempt than Northwestern State, 107-106, but the Colonels produced 14 fewer kills.
The opportunities were there, but the execution was not.
For Northwestern State, the victory was an important conference result as the Lady Demons improved to 4-3 in Southland play. Their offensive efficiency, especially in the first and third sets, allowed them to avoid giving Nicholls an opportunity to extend the match.
For Nicholls, there are certainly positives to build on, particularly the play of Edwards-Wyllie and some of the competitive moments in the opening and final sets.
However, the Colonels will need more consistent offensive production and fewer mistakes if they hope to turn things around as conference play continues.
With the Southland Conference Tournament getting closer, Nicholls still has opportunities to improve its position, but the margin for error continues to get smaller.
Thursday night showed that Nicholls can compete in stretches. The next step will be finding a way to turn those stretches into complete sets and, ultimately, match victories.
