League Trends That Could Benefit Zion Williamson

NEW ORLEANS – Possibly good news for Zion Williamson: the NBA is constantly changing.

The modern NBA has become increasingly focused on spacing, pace and efficient offense. Teams are shooting more threes, playing faster and looking for ways to create advantages before the defense gets set. The league was already coming off a record-setting stretch of offensive efficiency entering last season.

For Zion, that's an opportunity.

More Space Means More Zion

The biggest trend working in Zion's favor is spacing.

The more teams surround their primary players with shooters, the harder it becomes for defenses to pack the paint. And there may not be a player in the NBA who benefits more from an open lane than Zion.

If a defender stays attached to a Pelicans shooter, Zion gets room to attack.

If that defender helps, New Orleans has an opportunity for an open three.

It's a difficult choice for a defense.

Pace Can Make Zion Even More Dangerous

The NBA has also continued to embrace faster offensive basketball.

That should be music to Zion's ears.

Few players are more dangerous when they can attack a defense before it gets organized. A defensive rebound, quick outlet and Zion sprinting into space can create an advantage before the opponent has five defenders behind the ball.

The Pelicans don't necessarily need to play at the fastest pace in the league. They simply need to recognize when they have an opportunity to attack.

Efficiency Over Volume

Another important trend is that the NBA increasingly values how you score, not simply how much you score.

Three-pointers, free throws and shots around the rim remain the foundation of efficient offense.

That's practically a blueprint for Zion.

He doesn't need to become a high-volume three-point shooter to be one of the NBA's most efficient offensive players. His ability to score around the basket and draw fouls already fits perfectly into the modern offensive landscape.

Zion averaged 21.0 points while shooting 60.7% from the field in 2025-26, according to Basketball Reference.

The modern NBA is increasingly built around the things Zion does best: attacking space, getting downhill, drawing fouls and finishing efficiently, and the Pelicans' challenge is taking advantage of that environment.

If New Orleans surrounds Zion with shooting, plays with pace and uses his ability to collapse defenses, the league's evolution could work in his favor.

Understand the Pelicans. Don't just watch them.

Who Will Be the Pelicans' Best Role Players Next Season?
By Kaden Arkeder August 19, 2026
Well, it’s official. Jordyn Tyson is expected to miss two months due to his hamstring injury he suffered during practice. What a major blow to the team and fans who have been eager to see his talent out on the field. We’ll all have to wait a while longer before we Jordyn Tyson in a game. Unfortunately you cannot say this news comes as surprise. It was well known and documented Jordyn Tyson had quite the injury history throughout his collegiate career. The Saints were hoping he’d be able to leave those injuries in the past by slow playing his recovery during the offseason and give him a slow build up. But ultimately the plan did not work and now the Saints have to begin the season without their presumed number two receiver. With Tyson being out the Saints will have to piece together his absence with the other young wide receivers who have been standing out during camp and preseason. Guys like Bryce Lance, Barion Brown, and possibly even Bub Means could help fill the void although they wouldn’t be able to completely replace Jordyn Tyson’s talent and the attention he would demand to make Olave’s job easier. When players of this stature go down it’s never one player having to pick up the slack, it’s on everyone in the huddle to take on a little extra to cover up the loss. Another caveat of the Tyson injury now is the added importance of Chris Olave himself being able to stay healthy in the absence of Jordyn Tyson. Olave himself has had his fair share of injury history and ultimately was unable to play a full season until last year although it did end on a scary note with the blood clot. The Saints can survive if one of the two are out at a time but I don’t know if they would be able to overcome if both were out given the lack of experience behind them. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that and Olave and company can hold down the fort just fine until Tyson is ready to make his debut. We will all just have to continue anxiously waiting for that moment, hopefully the Saints can make it a little easier on us by winning in the meantime.
