LSU Baseball Still On Cloud 9

Chrissy Smith • July 5, 2023

If you follow sports even a little bit, you probably already know that the LSU Tigers are the 2023 NCAA College Baseball National Champions.

LSU defeated the Florida Gators in the best-of-three series in Omaha at the College World Series. The title is LSU's 7th all-time and first since 2009. LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson becomes the first head coach in NCAA Division 1 history to win the World Series in just his second season.

Here are some other facts that you might not have about this stellar team, though:

·      There are 15 players from Louisiana who are on this World Series Championship team.

·      LSU’s Paul Skenes was selected the 2023 D1Baseball Player of the Year after helping lead the Tigers to the national championship.

·      Skenes (13-2, 1.69 ERA) led the nation in strikeouts with 209, breaking the 34-year-old single-season mark of former LSU All-American Ben McDonald. He only walked 20 batters and held opponents to a .165 batting average in 122.2 innings.

·      LSU center fielder Dylan Crews (.426 average, 18 home runs, 70 RBI) is projected to be drafted #1 in Sunday, July 9’s MLB draft. However, there are rumblings that Skenes could be taken first over Crews. The Pittsburgh Pirates have the overall number one pick.

·      There are at least three other LSU players who are expected to get drafted on Sunday

·      No matter who gets drafted, all the players of the team are getting the royal treatment – including their families. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office escorted the family of Brayden Jobert (#6 for LSU and starting right-fielder) from the airport (MSY) back to their hometown of Slidell following the World Series.

Stayed tuned for an exclusive interview with Jobert next week right here at The Kneaux!

Team Stats (Trail Blazers at Pelicans) Final Score: 120-143 Rebounds: 419-57 Assists: 27-36 Blocks: 7-8 Steals: 5-10 Turnovers: 15-8 Stat Leaders Scoring Leaders: Shaedon Sharpe, 21; Trey Murphy III, 24 Rebound Leaders: Kris Murray, 9; Yves Missi, Saddiq Bey, 8 Assist Leaders: Deni Avdija, 6; Derik Queen, 7 My Player of the Game: Derik Queen Chrissy's Key Takeaways * The Pelicans have won their fourth game of the season. Yay ! * Jordan Poole was back tonight and he made a world of difference. His three-point shooting, confidence, and leadership were a ton of help. * Derik Queen is a problem for all other 29 teams in this league. This kid has a vision that hasn't been seen in any recent rookies, especially for a center. * Bryce McGowens was the second-leading scorer in this game with 23 points. He's stepped up in a big way. * In surprising news, Zion Williamson is questionable for Sunday's game at the Chicago Bulls. This is the first time in what seems like years that Zion's health is actually improving much sooner than projected. Whether this is a sign of Zion pushing himself or James Borrego pushing him, it's nice to see. Follow @TheKneaux on X, and follow me there too, @SportsChrissy.
