Lewis Delivers Historic 40-Point Masterpiece as Tulane Escapes UT Martin in Double Overtime Thriller!

In a season-opening classic that lived up to every ounce of its drama, junior guard Krystian Lewis authored a night for the ages, pouring in a career-high 40 points to lead the Tulane Green Wave to a hard-fought 100-98 double-overtime victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks on Monday night at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.

Lewis, making his Green Wave debut after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe, became the first Tulane player to score 40 or more points in a game since Phil Hicks’ 41-point effort against Samford in 1974. He is only the eighth player in program history to reach the mark and the first to do it in a Tulane debut. He also became the first American Conference player to score 40-plus since PJ Haggerty’s 42 for Memphis in the 2025 conference tournament.

The Monroe, Louisiana, native finished 11-of-25 from the field and an elite 17-of-18 from the free-throw line, adding seven rebounds and five assists while taking over completely in the second overtime. He scored all nine of Tulane’s points in the final extra period, including the game-winning free throws with less than a second remaining.

A Game of Relentless Swings

The contest featured 20 ties and 20 lead changes, with UT Martin holding the lead for more than 25 minutes.

The Skyhawks took a 37-35 edge into the locker room after a tightly contested first half in which both teams hovered around 43-44 percent shooting.

Tulane responded in the second half.

After falling behind by as many as nine, the Green Wave used a decisive 15-3 run to seize a 72-69 lead with under five minutes left in regulation.

The teams continued trading blows until Lewis’ late fadeaway forced the first overtime knotted at 78. In the first extra period, Lewis again provided a clutch three-pointer, but the game stayed even and headed to a second overtime.

There, Lewis simply would not be denied. His free-throw accuracy and composure under pressure sealed the win in front of 1,288 fans in Uptown.

Balanced Support Around the Star.

While Lewis dominated the box score, Tulane received strong complementary scoring. T.J. Nadeau added 15 points on efficient shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range (11 of those points coming in the first half).

Tyler Ringgold contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Joah Chappelle chipped in 13 points and five boards, while KJ Greene added 10 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Defensively and in the turnover battle, the Green Wave held clear edges.

Tulane forced 16 turnovers while committing only nine of its own and recorded 12 steals to UT Martin’s five.

The Wave also dominated the paint (40 points to 24).

Rebounds were even at 41 apiece, and both teams shot 47 percent from the field, but Tulane’s free-throw volume and accuracy (32-of-46) proved decisive.

UT Martin finished 19-11 last year and are projected to finish 3rd in their conference.

Redshirt senior safety Collin Jacob could make his return to the field this Saturday for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns after missing the past month with an upper-arm injury. Head coach Michael Desormeaux told reporters Monday that Jacob “has a real chance for this week” to return to action. The safety has been sidelined since suffering what appeared to be an arm injury during the first half of Louisiana’s October 3 matchup against Arkansas State. “For us, [this] is obviously huge news,” Coach Desormeaux said, while acknowledging the defense’s struggles through Jacob's absence. “Since he’s been out, I think defensively we’ve been a little inconsistent.” While Coach Desormeaux also emphasized that Louisiana’s defensive struggles cannot be attributed solely to Jacob’s absence, the statistics on how these last three games unraveled reveal a noticeable decline in performance since his injury. In the three games Jacob has missed, the Cajuns surrendered 401 total yards per game, compared to just 261 yards per game in the four games prior to his injury. The decline has extended beyond total yardage, with Louisiana allowing significantly more rushing and passing yards, along with more first downs, while forcing fewer turnovers. From the sideline perspective, the defense did not seem to be the defense fans saw earlier in the season, and a lot of it could certainly be attributed to his absence. Through the first four games and the first half against Arkansas State before his injury, Jacob recorded 28 total tackles, one interception and a forced fumble. His performance against UAB earlier in the season also earned him Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors. Whether Jacob will be available Saturday remains uncertain, with more clarity coming Wednesday evening when the depth chart and availability reports come out, or potentially later in the week. However, his return would provide a much-needed boost to a Louisiana defense looking to regain its early-season consistency. The Cajuns are coming off a bye week following their road loss to Southern Miss and will return home Saturday to host South Alabama in a crucial Sun Belt West Division matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm. A full preview of Saturday’s matchup will be available later this week. Abdul Abusada of Cajun Sports Talk. After months of waiting, Will Wade’s return to LSU got underway on Tuesday evening. There was a solid crowd for the return of The General, with the hype meter at a 10 for what Tiger fans hope is the revival of the basketball program. It was a bit of a slow start for the Tigers, missing a decent bit of good looks in the paint. Mo Dioubate got chance after chance within the first few minutes, but started 0-5. He was doing an excellent job of creating space to get his shots off, but they were just barely rimming out. Thankfully for the Tigers, their defense was on point. They were swarming on the other end of the court and making things difficult for the Privateers from the very beginning. At the 10 minute mark, UNO only had 4 points on the board. The strong defending allowed LSU’s offense to shake off the rust from the first few minutes and finally find their groove. Michael Ruzic was the first off of the bench and he helped get the scoring going as soon as he stepped on to the court. His 7’0, 240 pound frame was proving difficult for UNO to defend. As the offense came alive midway through the 1st half, the Privateers went over 7 minutes without a field goal, as the Tiger defense continued to cause issues. One of the biggest issues was Saliou Niang, who recorded 6 steals, all of them in the 1st half. Within less than a minute, he stole multiple inbounds passes and immediately turned them in to buckets. After the game, Will Wade referred to him as a monster, being able to guard every single position on the floor. At the half, it was complete domination by LSU. They led 53-17 with three players in double figures. Ruzic led the way with 12 points, while Niang and Donovan Dent each had 11. The 2nd half, overall, was not quite as crisp for the Tigers. Wade said afterwards that they were not very good and did not play up to their standards after halftime. The accountability is good to hear from game 1. Brice Dessert got off to a hot start for LSU, scoring 6 points in the first 3 minutes. Some of the sloppiness that Wade was referring to was the amount of fouls that his team had in the final 20 minutes. The Tigers had 16 team fouls, twice as much as they did in the 1st half. There was a period in which they fouled the Privateers 4 times in just 24 seconds. No matter if the performances slipped, the talent differential was just too much for UNO to overcome. They went on an 8-0 run at one point around the 8-minute mark, but the damage was done. Niang was the first Tiger to record a double-double for the 2026-2027 season. He finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, 6 steals, and 5 assists. He was doing everything and is an easy choice for player of the game. Dent recorded a double-double, also, as his 19 points led the team in scoring, while dishing out 10 assists. He also added in 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a blocked shot. One of the final highlights of the game was Wade drawing a technical foul, while up 88-44 and less than 5 minutes to go in a blow out. He was on the officials for majority of the 2nd half and the intensity was fun to watch. LSU drew one final big cheer from the Tiger crowd, as Gilad Levy drained a 3-pointer to hit the 100 point mark. His 8 points in the final 5 minutes helped get to the century mark. Six Tigers finished in double figures, along with Dent and Niang. Ruzic scored 17, Dessert finished with 13, Bashir Jr had 11, and Dioubate scored 10. After his 0-5 start, he went 4-4 the rest of the way. Up next Wade’s Tigers remain at home for a Friday night matchup with Texas Southern. Tipoff is for 7 pm central in the PMAC. They come in 0-1 after a 103-79 loss to Grand Canyon on Monday.
