Colonels Fall 16-2 at Houston Christian
Nicholls outgains the Huskies but is held without an offensive touchdown in Southland road loss
HOUSTON — Nicholls moved the football, created opportunities and even finished with more total offense than Houston Christian, but the Colonels were unable to turn enough of those drives into points Saturday night.
Houston Christian defeated Nicholls 16-2, handing the Colonels another tough Southland Conference loss heading into their bye week.
The Colonels finished with 335 total yards compared to 292 for the Huskies, but two turnovers, struggles on third and fourth down and the inability to finish drives ultimately proved costly.
Houston Christian led 9-0 at halftime behind three field goals from Lukasz Smolen. Nicholls had opportunities during the opening half, but the Colonels came away empty and went into the locker room still searching for their first points.
The second half brought more offensive production for Nicholls, including a quarterback change as Chase Richardson joined Ean Rodrigue under center.
Rodrigue finished 14-of-23 passing for 102 yards with one interception. Richardson went 7-of-14 for 84 yards while also giving Nicholls another dimension on the ground, rushing nine times for 49 yards with a long of 38.
As a team, Nicholls ran for 149 yards on 38 attempts.
Tamaj Hoffman led the Colonels with 70 rushing yards on 16 carries, while Shane Lee added 30 yards on 11 attempts.
The biggest offensive performance of the night came from Jordan Smith.
Smith finished with nine receptions for 122 yards, averaging 13.6 yards per catch with a long reception of 36 yards. He accounted for nearly two-thirds of Nicholls’ receiving yardage and remained the Colonels’ most productive option in the passing game throughout the night.
The concern, however, shifted beyond the final score late in the fourth quarter.
Smith was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury. His status was not immediately known following the game.
Despite gaining 335 yards and finishing with 18 first downs, Nicholls struggled in critical situations. The Colonels converted just 4-of-15 third-down attempts and 1-of-6 tries on fourth down.
Houston Christian was not dramatically better offensively, finishing 5-of-14 on third down, but the Huskies avoided turnovers and were able to capitalize when opportunities presented themselves.
Nicholls turned the ball over twice.
Rodrigue was intercepted by Javon Bejarano, who returned the interception 48 yards for a touchdown. That defensive score proved to be a major difference in a game where Houston Christian’s offense never found the end zone.
Richardson also lost a fumble as Nicholls finished minus-two in turnover margin.
Houston Christian quarterback Cutter Stewart completed 19-of-31 passes for 173 yards, while Champ Dozier led the Huskies on the ground with 85 yards on 15 carries. Dozier also caught six passes for 59 yards, finishing with 144 yards from scrimmage.
Jamaal Hall II added five receptions for 59 yards.
Nicholls’ defense did enough to keep the Colonels within striking distance for much of the night.
Houston Christian finished with only 292 total yards and did not score an offensive touchdown. Smolen connected on three of four field-goal attempts, including a long of 43 yards, and added an extra point.
Kennon Loftin led the Nicholls defense with 11 tackles and a pass breakup. Skylar Husband finished with nine tackles and a tackle for loss, while Kasai Jones recorded eight tackles and a pass breakup.
The Colonels totaled five tackles for loss and three pass breakups while holding HCU to 3.4 yards per rushing attempt.
In many ways, the final numbers told the story of a frustrating night for Nicholls. The Colonels had more yards, more first downs and nearly an even split in time of possession, but Houston Christian won the areas that mattered most.
The Huskies protected the football. Nicholls did not.
Houston Christian turned its scoring opportunities into points. Nicholls repeatedly came away empty.
And in a game where neither offense scored a touchdown, Houston Christian’s defensive touchdown became the difference.
Nicholls will now enter its bye week with an opportunity to regroup before returning to action, while the status of Smith will be something to watch after the standout receiver left the field late in the fourth quarter.
Final: Houston Christian 16, Nicholls 2
